Sunday August 11th Have the opportunity to sing with a live jazz ensemble in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Study the “ins and outs” of vocal improvisation and have a spontaneous “musical conversation” with the band. This summer in Pasadena I’m offering a one day intensive jazz workshop for aspiring jazz / pop vocalists called “Voice Play”. We will craft your tunes, discuss phrasing, dynamics, how to sing your material in a fresh new way every time you sing it, mic technique, responding to what the instrumental ensemble is doing so the vocalist is part of a complete musical conversation. We will discuss chord progressions and song form so you won’t get lost on stage! Performance jitters…let’s discuss and tackle those unproductive nerves while singing! There will be a professional pianist, bassist and drummer ready to accompany, lend support and offer productive feedback! Part A: Noon to 1:30 PM: A cappella exercises designed to free up your creative voice with many wonderful adventurous fun (sometimes scary) exercises to help you really learn to “listen” and respond spontaneously, creating compositions on the spot and having musical “conversations” with other voices. You need no singing experience to enroll in Part A. All are welcome and encouraged to participate in this section of the day no matter what level or past experience. (Please arrive no later than 11:45) Break for refreshments while the band sets up Part B: 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. (You must take part A to participate in Part B) We will apply what we have learned in part A of the clinic to sing with an ensemble. Each participant will need to bring photo copies (in triplicate for piano, bass and drums) of at least 2 songs that they have memorized and are ready to try with the band. Vocalists will be performing their material and having it supportively critiqued.
