ECHOES OF THE HEART
The Creative Opportunity Orchestra performs a tribute to Tina Marsh

Austin's legendary jazz group, the Creative Opportunity Orchestra (led by interim Artistic Director John Mills), is gathering again after the recent loss of longtime Artistic Director and vocalist Tina Marsh. This concert will be held at the Laguna Gloria Amphitheater, Tina's most beloved performance location.

The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin Presents:
An Austin Tradition: Alex Coke, Suzi Stern,Rich Harney and Buddy Mohmed Dylan Thomas' seasonal short story, A CHILD'S CHRISTMAS IN WALES.

Suzi Stern reads this classic tale in an animated and colorful fashion, with her original music and the music of Rich Harney interwoven throughout the piece. The trio improvises sounds, textures and moods behind the poetry painting a magical picture sure to thrill creative music fans both young and old alike.

OFF THE EDGE OF THE PAGE: AN EXPLORATION OF MUSIC AND VERSE

Suzi Stern sings Verse with 'ReSounding Words'
This set begins with our first exploration into music and verse, led by longtime CO2
member John Mills. Passing the poetic imagination through the prism of new musical
structure, sound, and texture, 'ReSounding Words' will also feature composer Stephen
Barber and the poetry of Kim Christoff, Judith Austin Mills, and Robert Creeley.

'ReSounding Words' will close with a performance by Atash, one of Austin's premier world
music ensembles. Atash's music, led by vocalist Mohammad Firoozi, will be based on the
writing of the great Sufi poet Rumi.

6:00 - 8:00 pm
Join the musicians for a light summer dinner provided by Ararat, one of Austin's best
Middle Eastern restaurants. Served alfresco, this lovely 3-course meal (starter, entrée,
and dessert) will please both vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Entrees include Mansaf
(slow roasted, spiced lamb) or Sweet Potato Chole (a rich, homestyle chickpea stew).
Only 50 places available so get your seat soon!

8:00 - 10:00 pm
Vocalist Tina Marsh & woodwinds player Alex Coke begin the evening with a free-flowing
set of adventurous settings of music, poetry, visuals and surprise guests. The evening
closes with a performance by special guest artist pianist Diane Moser from NY,
performing her piece Music for the Last Flower, which was commissioned through
CMA/Doris Duke's New Works Program in 2004. This quintet will feature Moser on
piano, and longtime CO2 collaborator from New York bassist Ken Filiano, John Mills,
Brian Allen, Dave Colvin.

Program Notes: Nationally acclaimed poet Sekou Sundiata is the 2006-07 Cline Visiting Professor in the Humanities at the University of Texas at Austin. George Forgie is a historian at UT Austin who specializes in the Civil War. Poet Abe Burickson is a fellow at the Michener Center for Writers. Shirley Thompson teaches American Studies and African American Studies at UT Austin. Cellist Leanne Zacharias is a member of several classical and experimental music groups, including the Austin Chamber Ensemble. Theater professor Charlotte Canning conducts research on the Chataqua tradition. Suzi Stern is a well-known jazz vocalist, lyricist, and teacher based in Austin. Bassist John Fremgen teaches jazz and bass at UT Austin and directs the AIME ensemble. Evan Carton directs the Humanities Institute. Special thanks to Betty Naylor and Judith Rhedin for helping to arrange this event.

This event is part of Sundiata's The America Project as an Arts, Humanities, and Civic Dialogue. In Austin the project will culminate in "the 51st (dream) state," a multimedia performance.
